Building on local efforts to ramp up STEM education, from BorgWarner Turbo Systems’ workshops with elementary students to the Nesbitt Discovery Academy (STEM High School), UNC Asheville is among area institutions preparing young talent for engineering jobs that may not even exist yet.

UNC is launching a FIRST Robotics Competition that pairs teams of high schoolers with mentors from the University’s Mechatronics program to build complex robots that perform challenging tasks. Why does it matter? These programs build a local pipeline of STEM talent for companies to tap into, from world-class manufacturers like GE Aviation and BorgWarner to tech startups.
