South Asheville is home to a cutting-edge manufacturing facility building next-generation intelligence into RFID tracking tags. What the @#$% does this mean, you ask? Here’s a Wall Street Journal article to explain it.

Or better yet, here’s NFL Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith to talk about it. Emmitt was getting sick and tired of showing up to signing events only to discover footballs with his counterfeited signature already on them. So Emmitt turned to SMARTRAC, which embedded smart, cloud-connected RFID tags in his authentically signed footballs. That allows fans to use their smartphones to quickly verify whether they’re buying a high-priced knock-off or the real thing. Luxury brands like Moncler and Salvatore Ferragamo like this technology too. And we like that’s its being worked on here.
