Get Smart About Intellectual Property

January 12 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

What exactly is intellectual property? Does your business have any? Should you have any?

Startups and early-stage companies have a lot of irons in the fire, and the protection of intellectual property might be on the back burner. Ignoring or delaying addressing these issues can be detrimental to the success of a business, so you should make sure that doesn’t happen to your business.

Rebecca Crandall is an intellectual property attorney at McGuire Wood & Bissette, Asheville’s oldest law firm. She’ll give you a crash course in the different types of intellectual property (IP), whether you have IP, and whether you should have IP. Specifically, she’ll explain copyrights, trademarks, and patents, how to perfect your ownership rights in them, and how to enforce your rights. You’ll learn about how copyright protection is present at the time of creation, that trademarks don’t exist without consumers, and why there’s no such thing as a poor man’s patent. The talk will include real-world examples, including stories about how local businesses have been impacted (both positively and negatively). You won’t be bored!

A workshop isn’t a workshop without time for questions, so feel free to bring any you have during or after the presentation.

Rebecca Crandall, an Asheville native, is passionate about assisting entrepreneurs in protecting their most valuable business assets. As WNC’s only Board Certified Trademark Specialist and a registered patent attorney, she focuses her problem solving skills on helping clients avoid and mitigate business risks with respect to trademarks, patents, and copyrights. She assists with registration and enforcement of these rights as well as assisting with a variety of internet and computer related matters, from defending and prosecuting cybersquatting claims through ICANN proceedings to drafting website terms of use, privacy policies, and software agreements.
